I’ve been asked to contribute something to our website. So… I’ve been thinking long and hard about this. As the manager of The Paper Store & more in Kenilworth for close to 16 years now, I have seen printing trends, companies and the industry itself change drastically. Obviously, the proliferation of electronic devices has contributed greatly to the decline in actual printed material. But, I believe there is no substitute for a book, a postcard, a thank you note, handwritten letter or any of the other thousands of uses paper offers us. At the risk of sounding nostalgic, I can tell you that the joy I get from reading an actual book or handwritten letter from someone has never diminished over the years. Undeniably, there is something special about it. One of my happiest memories as a child is my grandfather reading the classics to me. It instilled in me a love of reading that continues to this day.
Would it have been the same had we been staring at a computer screen? There’s no way to answer that question. However, I do know this. There is no replacement for a printed document or handwritten letter, there is no substitute for the feel the smell and the physical impact of the printed word printed image and if in the future these things go away the world will be greatly diminished for it. Paper and printing supplies are becoming more user-friendly, more environmentally friendly, and while the cost of everything seems to go up constantly, I believe paper is still a great and lasting value…something you can feel to see and, yes, even smell, and no computer screen, no electronic device can ever replace that.
